January Writing Assignment
The night was full of hope
My dreams empty of pain
When he came to the inn
To escape the pouring rain.
He poured himself a pint
As from my trembling hand
He took a cup of stew
His face was lined and tanned.
His eyes were dark and shadowed
His gray hair straight and long
Although his back was bent and bowed
His shoulders were still strong.
I knew that I would know him
For photos old I'd seen
Of the man who was before me
That old Merchant Marine.
My mother kept his picture
Inside her bedside stand.
She didn't know I'd seen it
Or think I'd understand,
The man who was my father
Who roamed the sea and foam -
Who didn't know that I'd been born
Whilst he was far from home.
