To a Friend

by Helen Graebner

Once, into a lifetime
There may come a friend
Who listens with his mind.
He shares your joy in words
Dropped like pebbles
Along garden paths
Leading to truth.
His mind strikes sparks from yours
Igniting the dry tinder of thought
Into flaming ideas
That warm
And excite.
In the light of his honesty
You look at yourself.

Once, into a lifetime
There may come a friend
Who listens with his heart.
He hears beneath your laughter
The grief you've hidden there,
And senses when the saltiness
Of unshed tears
Is burning in your throat.
He understands between the words
The things you cannot say
And strengthens you
With silence
Or with talk.

Once in a lifetime
Such a friend will come --
To the lucky ones!
